Drum Major/ Horn Captain Audition requirements

 

All persons wishing to audition for the drum major/ horn captain positions for the 2013 marching band season will need to fulfill with these requirements.

  1. Write a one-page essay answering these questions. Essays will need to be typed. Why is leadership important? How do you plan on leading? Tell us why you think your leadership qualities would make a good drum major. (Essays are due Monday May 6th)

 

  1. Demonstrate your conducting ability by conducting a previously chosen piece of music (only necessary for Drum Majors)

 

  1. Be present for the open audition on May 13th at 4pm

 

  1. Auditions will have a question and answer session. These questions will be based on leadership and a few scenarios.
  2. Candidates will conduct previously chosen music.

 

 

Expectations of the drum major/ horn captain will be high. They will need to demonstrate an ability to communicate to peers. They will need to be able to motivate, lift, inspire, and aid every member of the band. They will need to work hard to gain the respect of all members. They will be the liaison between the directors and the members of the band. They will need to be able to read a music score. They will need to be able to conduct proficiently. They will need to be able to attend a summer drum major camp (there are several in the state at different times throughout the summer). Most importantly, the drum major is the face of the band. They will represent the band and its members and directors at all times and in all places thus, a high moral compass will be necessary for all candidates.

 

The Kingston Band Directors and a few members of the school faculty will judge auditions. The Directors of the Kingston Band reserve all right to chose the most qualified candidate to fulfill the drum major and horn captain positions.
