Shelton takes FFA speech title

ATOKA — Kingston senior Ashten Shelton took first place in the Atoka P.I. FFA Speech contest last week. The win qualifies her to continue competing in hopes of earning a berth in the upcoming state competition.
Agriculture educator Chris McGowan is optimistic about Shelton's chances at advancing, citing her poise and preparation.
"(The win) is a pretty big deal," McGowan said. "There were quite a few entrants, but there were just two who advanced."
Shelton, the Kingston FFA chapter president, said despite her experience, she was somewhat nervous during the contest, and feels she can perform at a higher level in upcoming meets.
"I felt alright about it," she said. "I know I could have done better — I just need to keep my nerves in check a little better."
The topic of her presentation was agribusiness.
Her next competition will be April 22 at Murray State College in Tishomingo. Should she qualify for state, that meet will be April 26 in Stillwater.
