Kingston students show well at county livestock show
KINGSTON — In a competitive livestock show, Kingston exhibitors made what their director described as an “awesome” showing.
An impressive 21 animals qualified for the premium sale in the Marshall County Junior Livestock Show. Agriculture Director Chris McGowan said that number is much higher than he might have anticipated.
“I was very pleased,” McGowan said. “To have that mane make the premium sale — and a lot of others come close — we far exceeded my expectations.”
The program is in only its second year of showing cattle after a long hiatus, but several animals took high honors, including Christian McGowan’s Grand Steer. Several others placed with beef exhibits, and Chris McGowan gave much of the credit to house parents at the Chickasaw Children’s Village for helping to prepare quality animals for competition.
Another top exhibit came from Shianne Tucker, whose doe goat also took top honors.
Several are expected to be competitive at the state level.
McGowan says the strides made this year bode well for the future of agriculture at Kingston Public Schools.
“I’d say we have a bright future,” the sponsor said. “As far as we’ve come this year, we’re already ahead of where I thought we would be. And I think we can continue to improve and build the program.”
